The Shelby State Bank opened its doors for business on November 20, 1931 just a few short months after Churchill & Webber, a private bank, was forced to close its doors amidst the trying economic times of the Great Depression.
The people of Shelby were quick to realize the importance of having a community bank and within a few weeks, ninety-five local people had signed applications for stock in a new bank – The Shelby State Bank. Upon approval by state banking authorities, The Shelby State Bank opened for business and on its first day, over one hundred accounts were established. Within roughly a month’s time, the bank reported assets of $79,000.00 and was returning a profit for investors.
Located in the old Opera House in downtown Shelby from 1931 to 1966, a new building was constructed and over the years saw several significant expansions and renovations, the most recent in 2005. Today, Shelby State Bank operates from a state of the art banking facility and continues to be a cornerstone of the Shelby community.

Mishelle M. Comstock
Mishelle is a Central Michigan University graduate. She was hired in 1993 as the Bank’s auditor and received promotion to Assistant Vice President in 1999. Mishelle played an integral role in the Bank’s acquisition of Gales Agency and Pentwater Agency. In 2001 she was promoted to Vice President and Commercial Loan Officer.
In 2003, Mishelle was promoted again to Executive Vice President and was named Chief Operating Officer in 2004. Since 2011, Mishelle has held the titles of President as well as COO and she was appointed Chief Executive Office (CEO) in January of 2016. She is also the President of Gales Agency. Additionally, she serves as chairperson of the Community Foundation of Oceana County, is the director of the Mid-Michigan Banking Group, and is a board member for the Oceana County Habitat for Humanity and Fountain Hill Counseling Center.

A native of Walkerville, Bobby earned his Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Calvin College as well as a Master of Business Administration (MBA), Integrative Management from Michigan State University.
Bobby brings a wealth of experience in the financial services industry, having spent nearly a decade in lending and management at Lake Osceola State Bank. Bobby is married, enjoys long distance running, and loves to fish on Michigan’s inland lakes.

Fred R. Sanford
Fred is a graduate of Shelby High School and Northwood University. He has spent his entire career at Shelby State Bank, beginning in the area of collections in 1974. He then worked as an installment lender, amongst other lending department positions, before becoming a commercial lender in 1993.
Over the years, Fred has been involved in various organizations. He is a member and two-time past President of the Rotary Club, a member of Saint James Church and its Finance Council, and a member of both the Lincoln and Oceana Golf Clubs.

James began his career in the financial services industry in 1995 and is qualified as a General Securities Principal (FINRA Series 24), an Investment Adviser Representative (FINRA Series 66), and as a licensed Life and Health Insurance Agent in Michigan. James is a registered representative of LPL Financial.
James has earned his Bachelors Degree in Finance from Grand Valley State University, and continues to study at the College for Financial Planning where he focuses on finance, investment management, and financial planning. He enjoys coaching basketball, volunteering as a youth mentor for Kids Hope USA, and spending time with his family.
Mortgage Loan Originator
Deana joined the Bank in 2016 as Mortgage Loan Originator at the Main Office. She brings an abundance of business and real estate experience to her role, having spent a number of years as the director of property management for a Grand Haven firm. She has served as director of operations for the American Youth Foundation at Camp Miniwanca for the last several years. As a native of Oceana County, Deana enjoys serving the local customers and working with local real estate professionals. Community involvement is a priority for Deana and she is a member of Shelby Rotary Club, Mason-Oceana MSU Alumni Association, volunteers at Shelby Public School and Oceana College Access Network, and is a founding member of Oceana County Women Who Care. Deana resides in Shelby with her husband and two children.

Marsha began her career with the Bank in 2000 as a teller, a position she held for a short time before becoming a Customer Service Representative. She served in this role until 2015 when she was promoted to Lobby Supervisor of the Main Office. Marsha is a graduate of Shelby High School as well as Hope College. She serves as a director of the Shelby Chamber of Commerce. Marsha enjoys camping and spending time with family.
